Example 1:
Write equations a) 2x + 3y = 4.37 and b) x – 4
= √3y in the form ax + by
+ c = 0 and indicate the values of a, b and c in each.
Solution:
a) 2x + 3y = 4.37 => 2x + 3y – 4.37 =
0
Comparing with ax + by + c = 0, we get
a = 2, b = 3 and c = -4.37 (Answer)
Comparing with ax + by + c = 0, we get
a = 2, b = 3 and c = -4.37 (Answer)
b) x – 4 = √3y
=> x - √3y
– 4 = 0
Comparing with ax + by + c = 0, we get
a = 1, b = - √3 and c = -4 (Answer)
Comparing with ax + by + c = 0, we get
a = 1, b = - √3 and c = -4 (Answer)
Example 2:
Write the following as an equation in two variables: a) y = 3 and
b) 2x = 5.
Solution:
a) y = 3 => y – 3 = 0 =>
0.x + 1.y - 3 = 0 => 0x + 1y - 3 = 0
(Answer)
b) 2x = 5 => 2x – 5 = 0
=> 2.x + 0.y – 5 = 0 => 2x + 0y -5 = 0
